We soon realized that on the edge of the Great Plains, wooden buildings and dirt roads are quickly reclaimed by the land. Some two decades ago, former historical society archivist Linda Aldrich and I went to San Miguel County to find what might be left of that other Los Alamos. In 1946, the Los Alamos Post Office was built and had no trouble claiming the town’s name because the other Los Alamos was long gone, having passed into history on the edge of the prairie in San Miguel County. That name was used until the Manhattan Project took over the plateau and Los Alamos mail channeled through P.O. Post Office Department, and, of those three, they selected Otowi. He was advancing through an amazing career, but it was about to speed up.Ĭonnell submit three possible names to the U.S. Seven years later he won the first of two Pulitzer Prizes for reporting. After returning from the war, Laurence earned a law degree at Boston University School of Law but chose to pursue a job as a newspaper reporter. He studied at Harvard until joining the U.S. Laurence was born in Lithuania but eventually made his way to the United States where he left his birth name behind and became William Leonard Laurence, a naturalized U.S. At that time, Laurence could never have imagined where his interests in science would take him. Four years later he attended a lecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to hear a young scientist named Robert Oppenheimer. Journalist William Laurence already had a keen interest in science when he attended the Harvard Tercentenary Conference of Arts and Sciences in 1936.
